Strongest Adaptive on Earth Is committed to ensuring that adaptive athletes have opportunities to participate in strongman competition in a way that is fair to all competitors. 

“Adaptive athletes”, are welcome to participate in strongman events within the adaptive division in accordance with the rules and guidelines listed below following the classification information also.  

Our handbook details the competition divisions, and classifications for competition within their adaptive division. Adaptive athletes are subject to all rules, guidelines and classifications listed on the Strongest Adaptive on Earth website.

Rules and Regulations 

Language and definitions for adaptive competition 

An adaptive athlete is a person with significant and permanent impairment that warrants competition in  a division of athletes with similar disabilities.  

  • Appropriate vocabulary used to refer to the 
  • Adaptive athletes
  • Vision impaired 
  • ATK above the knee
  • BTK below the knee 
  • Amputee  
  • Athlete or person with disabilities.   

Advisory committee  

We have developed an advisory committee of adaptive athletes from around the world to ensure unbiased treatment of athletes rules and guidelines. 

The advisory committee is composed of athletes from around the world, all with different abilities or disabilities. 

The committee’s duty is to solely advise Strongest Adaptive on Earth on the growth and the future of the sport, (i.e., classification guidelines, safety mitigation of events, event weights etc). 

Committee members have no ruling authority except in matters of classification appeals. 

The committee shall be composed of a minimum of three athletes of different classifications and country of origin, not excluding Strongest Adaptive on Earth. Committee members shall be voted in by current committee members to a maximum of 5 members representing different classification.

Regulations

Upon registration, each athlete shall fill out the information questionnaire emailed to them.  

This is to better serve the athlete and the event promoter.  

  • Name 
  • Disability  
  • Classification  
  • Aids used (personal aids, straps and or slings)
  • Aids needed (strapped into chair, box under feet).
  • Do you need your feet or legs weighted down?
  • Do you need assistance transferring seats? 
  • Lockout issues 

 

Equipment  

Seated bench  

  • 18” high ------ 17-17 ½” under the seat.
  • 15”-16” in width and length.  

Incline Bench 

  • 55°- 60° incline for general use (log, axle etc).
  • 50°- 55° for events with greater movement required (keg press, bag to shoulder etc). 

Bars 

  • Seated deadlifts must be performed on a power, squat or axle bar for any deadlifts exceeding 500 lb to ensure proper ground clearance and lockout.
  • Lifts over a 1000 lbs should be performed on a squat or axle bar but Is not a requirement.  

Box 

  • General box height is 36 - Equivalent height to a 55 gallon drum. 
  • Pick height for seated athletes is 24 

Log 

  • Men 12”  
  • Women 10 

 

Event guidelines  

 

Log 

  • Athletes in the one-armed division will use a circus dumbbell and or a one-arm log wherever possible.
  • Vision impaired athletes will start with Hands-on.
  • Seated Athletes will start seated in an inclined bench set at no less than 55° and no more than 60°.  Box height will be determined per individual athlete. Log must be just touching the chest.
  •  All other standard rules apply ( lockout, up/down commands etc). 

 

Deadlifts  

Athletes from the one-armed class will use personal sling and or devices. Replicating missing or dysfunctional extremity. 

  • Athletes from the vision impaired class Will start their event Hands-On. 
  • Athletes from the seated class will perform their event on the approved bench or in some cases a regular bench.
  • Some seated athletes may also require the use of aids such as slings or straps
  • All standard rules apply (lockout, up/down commands etc). 

 

Axle press  

  • Athletes from the one- arm class will grab the axle from the center of the bar and perform an axle clean and press with one arm.
  • Athletes from the vision impaired class will start the event with Hands-On.  
  • Athletes from the seated class will start seated in an inclined bench of no less than 55° and no more than 60° Box height will be determined per individual athlete resting the axle at no less than 3” and no more than 4” from the crest of the collarbone.
  • All standard rules apply (lockout, up/down commands) 

 

Circus dumbbell  

  • Athletes in the one-arm class May use a strap to replicate a second hand on the clean
  • Athletes from the vision impaired class will start with hands on
  • Athletes from the seated class will start seated in an inclined bench set at a minimum of 55° and or a maximum of 60°
  • Object will be picked from a box height of 24” set next to the athlete from the side of their choosing.
  • Athletes may choose to sit unassisted at a 90° position
  • All other standard rules apply ( lockout, up/down commands). 

 

Arm over arm 

  • Athletes from the one arm class will have a rope handler stand directly behind them all while keeping the rope rigid and taut but not as to pull the implement
  • Athletes from the vision impaired class may use their personal rope handler 
  • Athletes from the seated class will all use a 5”-6” foam roller under the knees to eliminate leg drive and provide an atmosphere of equality Athletes may request in addition a sandbag over top of their legs or feet but is not required.
  • BTK and ATK Athletes Will also use a 5to 6” foam roller under their knees eliminating knee and leg drive. Athletes may request in addition, a sandbag over top of their legs or feet but is not required.

 

Over bar event  

Bar height  

  • Men Minimum 48 to a maximum of 52
  • Women Minimum 42” to a maximum of 48”
  • Seated athletes 42
  • Athletes from the seated class will start on an incline bench set at a minimum of 50° and a maximum of 55°
  • Athletes may choose to sit unassisted at 90° but are not required. 
  • Athlete will pick the implement from a box height of 24”  set directly to their side.
  • One arm athletes get an additional 15 seconds to complete to compensate for the use of a sling 

 

Side to side  

  • Side to side may be used as an alternative to an over-the-bar event for seated athletes.
  • Side to side box height may vary greatly from a minimum of 24 to a maximum of 36 equivalent to the height of a 55 gallon drum.
  • 36 being the general height and the official height for World Records such as Sandbag and or Stone side to side. 

Sandbag or stone to shoulder 

  • Athletes from the one-armed class will utilize any slings or straps deemed as aids representing a second hand. Athletes may not directly utilize their limb of deficiency.
  • Seated athletes will start in an incline bench set at a minimum of 50° and a maximum of 55°
  • Athlete may choose to sit unassisted at 90° but is not required.
  • A 24-in box will be set directly to the side of athlete to pick and start the event.
  • From which then the athlete may go directly to their lap and continue for each additional rep. Lap to shoulder. 

 

Farmers event  

  • Athletes from the one-armed division will perform a suitcase walk Equivalent to 1/3 of the total weight utilized.
  • Athletes from the vision impaired class may have their guide with them to help navigate the course.  
  • Athletes from the seated division farm will perform a seated hold from an elevated seated platform to ensure ground clearance and athlete safety.
  • Seated Kettlebell holds should be substituted wherever possible to ensure athlete safety. 

 

Keg press 

  • Athletes from the one arm class will clean and press with one arm. 
  • Athlete may choose to lock out with the keg resting inside( thumb in) or (fingers inoutside of their arm.
  • Athletes from the Seated class will start seated at an incline of a minimum of 50° and a maximum of 55°
  • Athletes may choose to sit unassisted at 90° but not required.
  • A 24-in box will be set directly to the side of athlete to pick and start the event.
  • From which then the Athlete will clean from their lap and press. 
  • All standard rules apply (lockout up/down commands). 

 

Throwing bag over bar 

  • Bar height Shall be set at a height of 15 ft for standing men athletes and 12 ft. For standing women and seated athletes.
  • Athletes from the one-armed class will throw utilizing one arm and or a one-arm throwing bag. 
  • Athletes from the vision impaired class will require two volunteers to ensure protection of the athlete should the bag come back down directly onto the athlete. 
  • BTK and ATK Athletes May use the one-arm throwing method but are not required.
  • Seated athletes with hip function will throw from deadlift bench and or seat.
  • Seated athletes without hip function will throw from an incline bench set at a minimum of 55° and a maximum of 60° facing forward the implement and throwing over.
  • Seated athletes may choose to throw while strapped in or with weighted bags on their feet but not required. 

 

Medley event

  • One armed athletes will receive an extra 15 seconds to the event to compensate for the time lost utilizing straps or slings? 
  • Visually impaired athletes may have a handler on the floor to help guide and give audible cues.
  • Seated athletes will start the event in an incline bench set at a minimum of 50° and or a maximum of 60°.
  • Seated athletes will pick the implement from a 24-in box set to their side and place it on a box of the opposing side Opposing box height is set to the promoter’s discretion). 

Special notes 

  • Visually impaired athletes will be allowed a guide handler on the competition floor at all times for safety reasons and audible cues. 
  • Announcer and or referee shall ask the audience for silence during their events.  
  • Wheelchairs Will not be utilized in Strongest Adaptive on Earth federation
  • Not all seated athletes utilize wheelchairs in their day-to-day, And specialty load bering wheelchairs are expensive and not readily accessible to all athletes and or promoters.
  • However some world record events such as harness pulls will require 
  • A wheelchair from which who’s safety will be deemed the responsibility of the athlete. 

World record attempts

  • Strongest adaptive on Earth. Highly supports and urges world record attempts, we do however mandate a two-week notice before a world record is attempted.
  • This is to ensure contact between the promoter, the athlete and our federation to ensure a fair and regulated attempt.
  • All world record attempts must be made at an accredited competition, Record breaker event, National or World event.
  • All record attempts must be accompanied by two videos. Where both the athlete and the implement will be clearly visible.
  • One video directly facing the athlete and the implement. 
  • The second video set at 90° from the athlete and the implement.  
  • All world record attempts must be weighed on camera in one continuous video including up command and down command.
  • World record attempts may be weighed before or after the lift, but must be one continuous video.
  • All federation rules and guidelines for the event of attempt must be followed.
